Intro

In 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger shocked the wrestling world by taking an active role behind the scenes in the newly rebranded World Championship Wrestling. Fourteen years later, WCW is an international company in long-standing alliances and wars, with a product and an image molded by its owner. Follow the company as it continues its history and shows the world what it truly means to be the best.

(Outside of universe, this is a diary for my long-running TEW save started in Genadi's The Superfly Effect database, that I have played up to 2001 over the span of four years. There's a lot of history that has been changed, so every so often I'll try and play catchup - but otherwise, let me take you for a ride!)

WCW SuperBrawl 2001

20,000 in attendance at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY
Commentary by Jim Ross and Mike Tenay.

The culmination of the Blackjack Classic - SuperBrawl 2001 comes from the heart of New York City! Tonight's main event sees Lance Storm attempt to reclaim the WCW International Heavyweight championship from Sting, while earlier in the night Konnan and Mark Henry will meet in the finals of the Blackjack Classic and Steve Corino will attempt to win a championship opportunity and a championship in the same night! Catch all of this and more after the break!

1. WCW World Television Championship: Steve Corino defeated Toshiaki Kawada in the night's opening contest to make his tenth defense of the Television championship and become eligible for Option C. On commentary, Tenay was quick to remind everyone about the accomplishments of Kawada after his return - both in Japan and in WCW during the mid-90s. Nevertheless, his past didn't help him escape the Old School Expulsion, which Corino used to put him away after 8:12. (80)
2. As expected, after the match Corino immediately grabs a microphone and cashes in Option C. The unique stipulation set up for his inaugural challenge means that he'll be facing Chris Jericho for the world championship later tonight, but first, he must vacate the WCW World Television championship. (72)
3. In a tag match between runners-up in the Blackjack Classic, the team of Jeff Hardy, Rob Van Dam, Barry Windham, and Shinya Hashimoto defeated Glenn Gilbertti, Kanyon, Paul Wight, and Hector Garza following a Five-Star Frog Splash from Van Dam to Gilbertti in 10:21. (80)
4. Legion del Reyes (Juventud Guerrera & Mr. Aguila) defeated The Machines (Super Strong Machine & Human Suplex Machine) in 8:49 after Juvi pinned SSM following a Dragon Suplex. (76)
5. Backstage, DDP approaches Simon Diamond. He congratulates him on picking up the victory on Monday, but says that Simon hasn't convinced him yet. Tonight, he gets the chance to prove himself - they've got the Hell's Boulders in their debut match. (71)

6. WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Matt Hardy defeated Crash in 6:29 after a flying leg drop to make his first defense of the cruiserweight championship. Spotted in the audience during this match were Milano Collection AT and his associate, Vittoria Valentine. (80)
7. Diamond Dallas Page & Simon Diamond defeated Hell's Boulders (Brutus Boulder & Horace Boulder) in 5:42, after DDP laid Horace out with the Diamond Cutter. Hell's Boulders were accompanied to the ring by Jimmy Hart for their debut, but still came up short against the two Diamonds. (68)
8. Adam Castle defeated Chris Benoit in 12:07 following an Impaler DDT. (80)
9. Keiji Mutoh defeated Power Warrior in 13:11 following a Shining Wizard. After the match, Jake Roberts walked out on the ramp before the lights went out. When they came back, Jake was still on the ramp, but Power Warrior was bloody and laid out in the middle of the ring. (92)

10. WCW United States Championship: D'Lo Brown defeated Tajiri & Nova to become the new United States champion, following a Lo Down to Nova 14:40 into the match. (82)
11. Sting is in the interview area, where he's preparing to talk about his encounters with Lance Storm. He says that there are three qualities he values the most: honor, trust, and respect. Sting says that Lance Storm isn't honorable, and he sure hasn't earned his trust, but with how many times Storm has taken him to the limit, he's starting to earn his respect. He warns him, though - all he's ever asked for is to be shown that respect, and for anyone who disrespects him, well, they learn why they should respect him. If Storm refuses to say that he respects Sting, well, that's his choice. But, by the end of the night, Sting is going to stand across from Lance Storm, win or lose, and he's going to offer him a handshake. If Storm wins, Sting will be the first one to congratulate him and tell him he's earned his respect. If Sting wins, though? If Sting retains that championship, with God, his family, and the whole world watching? All he's going to ask is that Lance Storm be man enough to shake his hand and settle this once and for all. Get ready, Lance - it's showtime! (93)
12. Dwayne Johnson & Steve Austin defeated The First Family (Scott Steiner & Lex Luger) in 14:16 following a Stunner from Austin to Luger. Immediately after the bell rang, Dwayne and Austin got in each others' faces and started to argue, leaving the perfect opportunity for Steiner to pull his lead pipe from under the ring and attack both men with it! Steiner stands tall above the two men. (79)

13. WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Chris Jericho defeated Steve Corino to retain the WCW World Heavyweight championship in 16:41 following a Lionsault. Leading up to the finish, Lance Storm attempted to get involved with the match, but his presence just served as a distraction for Corino and allowed Jericho to take the upper hand. An awkward dive to the outside left Corino visibly hurt, and initial reports indicate that he suffered a cracked sternum as a result. (83)
14. Blackjack Classic 2001 Finals: Mark Henry defeated Konnan in 12:32 with a Death From Above, making him the winner of the 2001 Blackjack Classic. Henry's celebration is a whole patriotic scene, with confetti and pyro for the victory - and yes, Henry totally wore USA-themed gear here. (84)

15. WCW International Heavyweight Championship: Sting defeated Lance Storm in 17:05 with a Scorpion Deathlock to retain the WCW International Heavyweight championship. Following the match, Sting extended a hand for Storm to shake - and Storm accepted! The two embraced, and Storm raised Sting's arm - although he still didn't look too happy about the loss. (86)
