2001's Legends Reunion, Slamboree offers a series of world-class main events: a world title showdown between Chris Jericho and Dwayne Johnson, a five way battle for the International Heavyweight championship, and a four way ladder match to crown the first United States champion in years! Also on the night includes multiple legends matches, including Butch Reed's retirement match and a challenge from Steve Corino to any former Television champion, and on TV before the show was the 2001 Hall of Fame ceremony! Catch all of this and more below the break!
Before the show, we saw the 2001 Hall of Fame ceremony, and the list of this year's inductees is as such:
The Crockett Family (David, Jim Jr, & Jim Sr.)
Bob Caudle
Dick Slater
Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff
Bob Backlund
On to the PPV!
1. In the first match of the night, Billy Kidman & Shane Helms & The Dudley Boyz defeated Dream Chasers (TAKA Michinoku & Funaki) and Legion del Reyes (Juventud Guerrera & Chavo Guerrero) in 6:30 after Helms pinned Funaki with a Vertebreaker. The match served as a tag team eliminator, and Kidman & Helms and The Dudleyz will face the Men of War later tonight in a tag title match. (74)
2. Rob Van Dam defeated Konnan in 7:34 with a Five Star Frog Splash. After the match, the two shook hands. (79)
3. In the locker room, Ric Flair reluctantly tells Eric Bischoff to take full charge for the night, so Flair can focus on preparing for his match. (85)
4. WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Matt Hardy defeated Yoshinari Ogawa to become the new WCW Cruiserweight champion with a Twist of Fate after 11:28. (78)
5. In an old-fashioned squash match and the first of the Legends' matches, the Road Warriors defeated Horace Boulder & Jim Steele in 1:47 after a Doomsday Device. Astonishingly, somehow during this squash, Animal suffered a slipped disk. At least Horace Boulder was shockingly well-received. (46)6. Randy Savage is in the ring! He cuts a promo on what his generation brought to professional wrestling, and what a glorious night something like Slamboree is. During the promo, he sneaks in a couple shots at Dwayne Johnson, but nothing else of note happens. (100)
7. Butch Reed Retirement Match: Mark Henry defeated Butch Reed in 5:55 with a second-rope splash in the second Legends' match of the night. (66)
8. WCW Television champion Steve Corino makes his way to the ring! He says that as the current reigning Television champ, it's his responsibility to make sure that his title is defended week in, and week out, and he's damn good at it. In fact, Corino says that he's the best to hold that title, and tonight, just for the "Legend's Reunion", he's going to prove it. Any former TV champ who thinks he can beat Steve Corino should come down here and face him! Just then...
Dusty Rhodes shows up to answer the challenge! The two go through some back and forth, and the match is set! (91)
9. WCW World Television Championship: Steve Corino defeated Dusty Rhodes in 6:18 with an Old School Expulsion to make his fourth defense of the WCW World Television title. (81)
10. Before the final Legends' match, Honky Tonk Man comes out to introduce the person he's managing tonight, Greg Valentine! After Valentine makes it to the ring, Honky says that he's gonna give the crowd a treat - a live song! However, before he can get too far into an Elvis hit, Bob Backlund's music hits and the match is on. (69)
11. Greg Valentine and Bob Backlund went to a draw in 3:26 after Killings, Big T, and Glenn Gilbertti interfered and attacked both men. Killings grabbed a microphone and says that they're being held down in favor of all these old men - no one cares about Greg Valentine or Bob Backlund in 2001, and new talent like himself, Big T, and the "Serious Wrestler" Glenn Gilbertti are losing opportunities for guys who should be in retirement homes. Honky Tonk Man steps on the apron and challenges them to a six-man tag - we've got a match! (46)
12. The Light (Killings, Big T, Glenn Gilbertti) defeated Greg Valentine, Bob Backlund, & Honky Tonk Man in 6:15 after Honky Tonk Man hit Big T with a guitar and Big T no-sold it completely, following up with a lariat and a cover to Honky. (63)
13. Eric Bischoff says that after the events of the last Thunder, he's decided to make a change to the scheduled International Heavyweight title match - Raven will be added, making it a five-way match for the title! (73)
14. WCW World Tag Team Championship: Men of War (Sean O'Haire & Mark Jindrak) defeated Kidman & Helms & The Dudleyz in a three-way tag match following a Sitout Crucifix Powerbomb from Sean O'Haire to Shane Helms after 8:04. (82)
15. Scott Steiner defeated Steve Austin in 10:40 with a Steiner Recliner following a surprise megaphone shot from Jimmy Hart! (79)
16. Vader defeated Ron Simmons in 10:38 with a Power Bomb. (78)
17. Backstage, Steve Austin is furious - full on throwing chairs and yelling backstage. Elsewhere, Scott Steiner and Jimmy Hart are gloating, and Jimmy announces that Steiner is officially the ace of the First Family! (70)
18. The United States title match is next! Appearing specially to do the ring introductions and unveil the new belt is the very first champion, Harley Race! (68)
19. WCW United States Championship: Tajiri defeated Ricky Steamboat, Nova, & D'Lo Brown in a ladder match in 7:52 to become the first new WCW United States champion. (80)
20. Power Warrior & Mike Awesome went to a draw against Keiji Mutoh & Super Strong Machine after a blackout attack left Power Warrior and Mike Awesome both laid out after 10:30. (74)21. "Mean" Gene Okerlund is on interview duty for the night, and he's here with the WCW World Heavyweight champion Chris Jericho! Gene and Jericho have some back and forth, and Jericho says that he stands by what he says - there's no way that he's going to lose his title tonight. (69)
22. Paul Wight defeated Ric Flair in 5:52 with a Chokeslam. (78)
23. In a match with Bret Hart as the special guest referee, Christian Cage defeated Adam Castle. After 8:43 of an even and fair contest, Adam Castle suddenly low-blowed Christian Cage out of nowhere! (80)
24. Immediately after the match, Bret confronted Castle for attacking Cage, just for Castle to roll out of the ring and ignore him. While Bret was checking on Christian, Castle snuck back into the ring with a chair and hit Bret in the head with it! With Bret Hart out, Castle went outside to grab another chair. He placed one under Christian's head, and followed up with a con-chair-to to his best friend! With Bret and Christian both laid out, Castle walks away while the rest of the Hart Foundation rush to help out those in the ring. (73)
25. Gene Okerlund is here with the other competitor in the main event, Dwayne Johnson! Dwayne cuts a big promo saying that tonight is the night when he takes the WCW championship back. (72)
26. WCW International Heavyweight Championship: Sting defeated Lance Storm, Vampiro, Kanyon, & Raven in 17:41 after Sting forced Kanyon to submit to the Scorpion Deathlock, winning the WCW International Heavyweight title and finally earning his revenge on Kanyon. (94)
27. WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Chris Jericho defeated Dwayne Johnson in 19:44 with a Lion Tamer after Steve Austin interfered and attacked Dwayne. (84)
